I have a suggestion about changing campaign financing, but don’t know, whether it
is doable! Would it be possible to change campaign financing to let every candidate running for office have equal amounts of money taken out of taxes, instead of the present system which is extremely unfair (in terms of the rich having too much influence and also very time consuming for the candidates) (Of course, should this be doable, taxes would need to be raised somewhat!)
I would appreciate getting a response!
Thank you,
Ilse Hadda
Sorry for the delay in responding. I just saw this comment from you.
The Berkeley Fair Campaign Practices Commission (FCPC) will hold a public workshop April 23rd on proposed
changes to the City Charter and the Berkeley Election Reform Act to allow for public financing of local elections.
The workshop will be at 7 p.m. at the North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst Ave. This issue was referred by
council to the FCPC last year, the FCPC is now seeking public input before making a recommendation to council for
the November 2016 ballot.
In addition, BCA will be holding a forum on Fair elections in the Fall.
Ilsa: Your idea comes before city council on November 10th: A proposal to use city general funds to support candidates for city offices, when candidates agree to accept less money from donors. Please go to November 10th on our Calendar on this website to see the location and time of the meeting.
Thank you for your interest in this question.
Dear Ilse, At last night’s City Council meeting (4/5/16) , an agenda item was for them to put a measure on the ballot for public financing of local campaigns. It has been long in the making and, although one Councilmember questioned the financing, I think it passed. It was a long very lively meeting which you may watch online: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us
Thanks for your inquiry and excellent suggestion.
ps In case you want to watch, that agenda item was taken up very late, after 10pm I believe.
how/where do I renew my BCA membership on line?
Go to the subscriptions tab, scroll down and fill out the form, that gets you on our database, then it will ask you to make a payment through Paypal.
The Berkeley city council voted to ban menthol cigarettes on the grounds that they are bad for us and they care. What a load, they allowed them to be sold in Berkeley again. All store owners have to do is pay a new permit fee and they get a new license to sell them. The council members who voted for this should all be thrown out. I wonder if anyone will get back to me on this matter.
The city response is that this is not correct, it would be great to hear specifics from the vendor if he is willing.
