She&#8217;s dedicated to fighting gentrification, and is active in Berkeley Citizens Action, Friends of Adeline and community protests, while she tirelessly serves the physical therapy needs of the unhoused and disabled as well as the rest of us. As a homeowner and a businesswoman she brings a diversity of experience and communities together. As a refugee of American Imperialism in the Middle East she\u2019s seen first hand how our military adventurism has negatively impacted the world. She\u2019s generous beyond her means and a role model for all of us.<br><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/4c47cb6d28d68e01470bfc79f\/images\/0c3bd92f-b820-4f8f-a3fd-5924345b433e.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br><br><strong>Stefan Elgstrand<\/strong>\u00a0has been an aide to Jesse Arreguin for five years and is deeply knowledgable about housing policy and rent board function and procedures. He\u2019s on the Berkeley Citizen\u2019s Action Steering Committee, been on the Tenant Union Steering Committee, and has been closely involved in writing housing policy and housing funding efforts. A person of unquestionable integrity, he affords the board access to the mayor\u2019s office, even when he and the mayor disagree.<br><br><br><strong>The BCA Steering Committee also recommends you consider these 5 excellent candidates,<\/strong> <em>listed here in reverse alphabetical order<\/em>: <br><br><br><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/4c47cb6d28d68e01470bfc79f\/images\/6cb8dd29-242b-4ce3-8284-cd83e335ff8f.png\" alt=\"\"><br><strong>Xavier Johnson<\/strong>\u00a0is young and engaged legal fellow at Centro Legal. His work with tenants and the disempowered gives him insight and legal experience that will benefit our rent board. A former aide to Congress member Barbara Lee, he is young, bright, black, gay, and will be a rising star representing those whose voices have be silenced. The board needs him and we, as a community, need to ensure that he helps us build the next generation of leaders.<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/4c47cb6d28d68e01470bfc79f\/images\/36959be2-dbfb-4717-b2aa-c6b12e70a0e8.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br><strong>Mari Mendonca<\/strong>, appointed incumbent, has a deep passion for asserting justice for tenants, and a deep history in our local renter community. Her understanding of the processes of the board, her ability to work well with others, and her understanding of the needs of the community have served Berkeley well. She\u2019s multi-ethnic, a lifelong Berkeley resident who raised four children here, passionate and supported by Friends of Adeline as well as other local progressive organizations. She\u2019s an asset on the board and we need her for another term.\u00a0<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/4c47cb6d28d68e01470bfc79f\/images\/7c495c15-841a-499b-b91c-67bc3dcbbdad.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br><br><strong>Leah Simon-Weisberg<\/strong>, incumbent, has decades of legal experience representing tenants and organizing local and state wide actions to benefit tenants. She was the lawyer for Tenants Together in SF as well as tenant organizations in Los Angeles. She is the lawyer for Causa Justa in Oakland and was the attorney for the Moms4Housing Committee, which negotiated a settlement that drove a predatory Wall Street investment fund out of Oakland. If reelected, this would be her final term. We need her experience and leadership on the rent board.\u00a0<br><br><br><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/4c47cb6d28d68e01470bfc79f\/images\/aa478558-2ef4-41bf-bf5d-6cc6e6e974a6.png\" alt=\"\"><br><strong>Dominique Walker<\/strong>\u00a0is a proven leader who helped organize a large community effort which resulted in a negotiated\u00a0 settlement that allows local organizations to purchase homes at fair prices for permanent\u00a0 homes for the unhoused. Additionally, as a recently homeless African American mother, she brings real world experience to the board, which is critical to addressing the needs of our unhoused residents. She has the support of several activist organizations to get out the vote and to get out the news to all of Berkeley\u2019s tenants. Her experience, drive and commitment would be a great asset to our board.\u00a0<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/4c47cb6d28d68e01470bfc79f\/images\/a5b7b096-116d-4512-a5fe-74b33184332f.png\" alt=\"\"><br><strong>Andy Kelley<\/strong>\u00a0is a sophisticated and experienced local politician who could bring collaborative realpolitik results to our community.
